1/4/2007

The new Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) Rule 410 IAC 7-22, Certification of Food Handler Requirements. This rule became effective on June 19, 2003; however, the actual certification requirement did not take effect until January 1, 2005. The new rule incorporates much of the language in IC 16-42-5.2 with a few additions for clarity.

The rule is examination based and does not include a training requirement as part of the rule. Many potential certified food handlers will be seeking out this information, so attached is a list of entities that offer training and approved examinations.

The Conference for Food Protection (CFP) had previously contracted with the Buros Institute to review these organizations’ programs and examinations. As of September, the CFP will no longer perform this function. The CFP has contracted with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to perform this function. There are three (3) organizations that have applied for certification using the new ANSI process and an announcement has been made acknowledging that the 3 have passed and are recognized.

The attached list provides the names and contact information for the 3 accredited testing organizations and other organizations that provide training courses and that also offer one of the approved examinations. Furthermore, the Dietary Managers Association, will no longer be participating in this program, so their contact information is not provided.
