We maintain an early warning program to monitor the incidence of Eastern Equine, Western Equine, St. Louis and West Nile encephalitis viruses in the bird population (the reservoir). When the numbers of infected birds collected increase, the chance for an outbreak into the human population (via mosquito bites) increases. When an area is found to have statistically significant numbers of infected birds, staff collects mosquitoes for virus isolation (to confirm whether or not there is a serious problem), and conducts intensive surveys of the problem area to determine where local mosquito control efforts are most needed. We not only warn when an outbreak is possible, we also train and advise local health departments in implementing effective mosquito control programs.
