Health Insurance Coverage In Indiana
Indiana ’s Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) health insurance coverage is more successful when compared with the nation.
- 10.2% of the CSHCN are without health insurance at some point during the past year (in U.S. the percentage was 11.6).
- 4.8% of the CSHCN are currently uninsured (in U.S. the percentage was 5.2).
- 31.2% of the currently insured CSHCN have coverage that is not adequate (in U.S. the percentage was 33.8).
Access to Health Care
Indiana CSHCN have better access to health care when compared with the nation.
- 22.8 % of CSHCN families needed but did not get all respite care, genetic counseling and/or mental health services (In U.S. the percentage was 23.1).
- 12.4% of the CSHCN have one ore more unmet needs for special health care services (in U.S. the percentage was 17.7).
- 15% of CSHCN needing specialty care had problems getting a referral (in U.S. the percentage was 23.1).
- 7.3% of CSHCN rely on emergency room for a usual source of care (in U.S. the percentage was 17.7).
- 5.2% do not have a personal doctor or nurse (in U.S. the percentage was 17.7).
Activity
Functional limitation will hinder the daily activities of CSHCN. It is estimated that in Indiana:
- 38.2% of CSHCN had their daily activities moderately affected some of time.
- 21.2% had their daily activities consistently affected due to illness.
CSCHN Impact (Burden) on Family
- More than 1 in 4 of the families of CSHCN in Indiana (25.8%) reported that at least one family member had to cut back on number of hours worked in order to take care of a special needs child.
- One in nine of the family members of CSHCN in Indiana reported that they have stopped working because of health conditions.
- One in four of the families with CSHCN in Indiana reported that they have financial problems due to child’s health needs.
