Injury Prevention Program Home > Program Description Program Description

The Indiana State Department of Health Injury Prevention Program was established in 2002 to develop a core injury prevention focus and a sentinel surveillance system. The program is supported by a cooperative agreement from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Mission

The mission of the Indiana State Department of Health Injury Prevention Program is to aid in the development of strategies for decreasing injury and death among Hoosiers, which will improve the quality of life for all persons in Indiana.

Public Health Approach

Injuries are no longer considered accidents, but have recently been recognized as preventable by taking a public health approach to prevention.

Components of a public health model for injury prevention collectively involves:

  • Collecting and analyzing injury data
  • Designing, implementing, and evaluating interventions at multiple levels
  • Building a solid infrastructure for injury prevention
  • Providing technical support and training
  • Working with communities for policy change

Injury Statistics * and Publications

There were 3,454 (56.38 per 100,000 population) injury-related deaths among Hoosiers in 2001.

Unintentional injury is the 5 th leading cause of death for Indiana residents and the leading cause of death among Hoosiers 1 to 34. Majority of these deaths involves motor vehicle accidents (42.5 percent) and falls (12.7 percent).

Advisory Council

Mission: The mission of the Injury Prevention Advisory Council is to work with the Indiana State Department of Health to reduce injury-related morbidity and mortality in Indiana .

Goal: Through improved collection and dissemination of data and coordination of injury prevention and control efforts, the Indiana State Department of Health will reduce injury-related morbidity and mortality in Indiana.
