In February of 2006, Governor Mitch Daniels created the Indiana State Historic Records Advisory Board, or SHRAB. Charged with being the central advisory body for historical records planning and preservation in Indiana, the SHRAB works with the Commission on Public Records and repositories throughout the state to accomplish its task.

Funded by the Indiana State Historic Records Advisory Board (SHRAB), the Indiana Archives Month Committee is charged with the planning and production of statewide events focused on the education and promotion of Indiana's archival community during the month of October. Indiana Archives Month seeks to promote the use of archives and the preservation of historic records within our communities. Archival repositories throughout our state, such as the Indiana State Archives, the Indiana State Library, the Indiana Historical Society, and countless local institutions serve to preserve Indiana’s heritage through the written record. Through these archives, Hoosiers can study the past, trace their ancestors, learn about their community, and maintain the laws of our state.
For more material submission and event information, please visit the Indiana Archives Month page.
The Indiana State Historic Records Advisory Board (SHRAB) has awarded four archival assessment grants to Indiana organizations in an effort to determine and prioritize collection needs. The grants are designed to have experts in climate control, and archival documents evaluate conditions in Indiana-based organizations to safeguard their collections. Each grantee was eligible for up to $1,500 and has agreed to provide a cash or in-kind match of at least 25 percent.
At the end of the assessment, each institution will submit a final report to the SHRAB detailing the assessment process and findings. This report will be used to provide direction to each organization as well as a clearer picture of the condition of Indiana's historical holdings.
Applications were due to the SHRAB on May 14, 2010 and grantees were named June 4, 2010.
The Indiana State Historic Records Advisory Board (SHRAB) held five regional conferences in 2009 for archives professionals, educators, and volunteers. In 2010, the SHRAB provided an opportunity for interested individuals to travel to Indianapolis to take part in the spring conference series. Educators, elected officials, volunteers and archives professionals from around Indiana attended many of the five conferences, contributing to the program's success. In 2011 the Indiana SHRAB hopes to use these conferences to continue to develop a statewide network of people who are committed to preserving Indiana’s documentary heritage. The SHRAB hopes each conference advances the dialog about the many pressing issues involving the archival community, including the use of electronic records and digital repositories, finding grants and fundraising for new or continuing projects, and creating plans for the preservation or salvage of documents and materials. Information from the spring 2010 conferences can be found below. For more information, please contact shrab@icpr.in.gov.
