BMV > Registrations & License Plates > Vehicle Emissions Testing Indiana's Vehicle Emissions Testing Program

If you need additional information about the Indiana Vehicle Emissions Testing program, call the Clean Air Car Check toll-free customer service hotline at 1-888-240-1684 or visit the program's website at http://www.cleanaircarcheck.com/.

Who needs to be tested?
Vehicles registered in Lake and Porter counties are required to undergo emissions tests and tampering inspections every two years from 1976 and newer passenger vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 9,000 pounds or less. Auto manufacturers typically print the GVWR on the driver's side door jamb. It is not the same as the actual weight of the vehicle. Odd numbered model year vehicles are due to be tested in odd numbered calendar years and even-numbered model year vehicles are due to be tested in even numbered calendar years. The four newest model year vehicles are exempt. Consult the table below to determine when your vehicle is due for testing.

Year / Vehicle model years due for testing
2007 / 1977, 79, 81, 83, 85, 87, 89, 91, 93, 95, 97, 99, 01, 03
2008 / 1976, 78, 80, 82, 84, 86, 88, 90, 92, 94, 96, 98, 00, 02, 04

What do I need to bring to be tested?
Bring your Indiana Application for Vehicle Registration Renewal or your current registration with you to the test site.
Because you may be asked to exit your vehicle, please leave pets, other than service animals, at home.

Early testing is recommended...
If your vehicle is driven by a college student who is away at school or if the vehicle is kept in another state for part of the year, early testing is recommended. Vehicles can be tested as early as October of the year before they are due.

Avoid busy testing times...
The busiest days at the Clean Air Car Check stations correspond with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicle's renewal deadlines, the 15th and the last day of each month. To save yourself some time, take your vehicle in for testing on off-peak days. You can visit http://www.cleanaircarcheck.com/ for estimated wait times at the stations or call 1-888-240-1684 for current wait times before you head to the test station.
