An Indiana driver license issued by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles indicates the extent of the holder’s privileges to operate motor vehicles. Law enforcement officers use driver licenses to identify drivers and access driving records. Hoosiers also use driver licenses to prove their identity, for example, when voting, writing checks, and boarding an airplane.
Indiana law gives courts the authority to order the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to suspend a motorist’s driver license when he or she is found to have committed certain traffic violations. In most of these instances a minimum suspension period is required.
During 2008, the BMV is offering a special $5 discount on every registration renewed online to encourage customers to use our fast, secure and easy Web site to renew their license plates.
A completed certificate of title is evidence of vehicle ownership. In Indiana, all motor vehicles must be titled before they can be registered, plated and driven.
